“Come on Mudbark, up and at em.” Curi smiled down at the tom who looked at her with his tongue lolling from his mouth in excitement. “Play? You promised we’d play.” He was always so full of sunshine and it never ceased to fill Curi’s heart with a glowing sense of peace. Here was a man who lived each moment fully in the present, and it honestly filled Curi with a sense of awe and wonder. “Yup, it’s playtime. But remember, we’re taking it easy–you still aren’t your full self yet and we don’t want to make the injury worse.” Each word she spoke earned her a firm nod of the toms head, as if he were reassuring her that he was taking in each syllable and committing it to memory. His injury was coming along wonderfully, in all honesty and soon he’d be finally leaving his bed after the horrible injuries that had left him there for weeks. She watched as he got to his paws, carefully placing one paw in front of the other, as if testing himself, before he allowed himself to pick up a little

How many times had she folded and refolded the same article of clothing now, watching as the soft fabric yielded between the way her paws turned and twisted it. Beside her lay her freshly cleaned cloak, as well as her gloves, tail train, and other various items she had crafted for herself for this trip specifically. It was funny, in a way, thinking about how she had gone from having nothing in the way of clothing–her nose still wrinkled at the idea of looking like some twoleg–to having all of this. But she needed to do this. She would go and she would be successful, because Haven depended on her for it. Because she refused to watch anyone suffer by her hand. She thought about the deal with Wraith, wondered briefly how it would feel to no longer have his voice in her head, asking about their progress. She wouldn’t miss it, she didn’t think, but it still made her feel weird to think that after all this build up, it would finally be done. No longer looming over her head like a storm
